ICHARM 20th Anniversary Symposium
“Reducing water-related disaster risk to build a sustainable society”
◆Background / Purpose:
In recent years, climate change has led to unprecedented water-related challenges across the globe. At the United Nations Water Conference 2023, the concept of Water Cycle Integration (WCI) was positioned as a key element in the Water Action Agenda. In Japan, the revision of the Basic Plan on Water Cycle Policy in 2024 identified “Integrated River Basin Water Management,” which promotes the coordinated management of flood control, water use, and environmental conservation at the basin level, as a national priority.
To date, GRIPS and the Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) have jointly implemented the Disaster Management Program and the Disaster Management Policy Program. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM), a key partner institution of PWRI.
To commemorate this milestone, a public symposium will be held. The symposium will provide a platform to discuss scientific and technological contributions to addressing water-related disasters, such as floods and droughts, as well as efforts to operationalize the Water Action Agenda from the UN Water Conference 2023. These discussions will be conducted from the perspectives of the United Nations, national governments, and specialized organizations.
The outcomes of the symposium will be disseminated to the international community through forums such as the upcoming UN water-related meetings scheduled for December this year. Through these efforts, including contributions to discussions and actions under the post-2030 agenda, the symposium aims to promote global solutions to water-related challenges.
